What's happening

This bill prohibits insurers in New York from charging different disability insurance premium rates based on gender.

Why it matters

  1. Promotes Gender Equity. By prohibiting different premium rates based on gender, the bill aims to eliminate a longstanding source of financial discrimination, ensuring men and women pay equal rates for disability insurance coverage.

  2. Financial Impact for Policyholders. The change could lower premiums for groups (traditionally women) who may have faced higher rates, potentially making disability insurance more affordable and accessible to a broader population.

  3. Industry Practices and Compliance. Insurance companies would need to revise their underwriting and pricing models, potentially incurring administrative costs and altering how risk is calculated across insured populations.

  4. Sets a Precedent in Anti-Discrimination Law. This measure aligns insurance practices with broader anti-discrimination principles in New York, potentially inspiring similar reforms in other types of insurance or in other states.
