What's happening
This bill prohibits disability insurance providers in New York from charging different premium rates based on gender.
Why it matters
Promotes gender equality by ensuring men and women pay the same rates for disability insurance. , addressing a longstanding issue where women often faced higher premiums despite similar coverage.
Could make disability insurance more affordable and accessible for women. , who have historically been charged more, potentially increasing their participation in these insurance programs.
Forces insurance providers to base premium rates on risk factors other than gender. , encouraging the industry to use more individualized or actuarially sound criteria when determining costs.
Impacts both new and existing policyholders. (after renewals or modifications), meaning current customers may see changes in their premium rates, not just those purchasing new policies.

Title of bill
An act to amend the insurance law, in relation to prohibiting the impo- sition of different rates for premiums for the provision of disability insurance
PURPOSE::
To remove gender discrimination from disability insurance premium rates
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS::
Section 1 amends the insurance law, adding a new section 3215-a to prohibit insurance companies from charging different rates for disabili- ty insurance on the basis of gender.
EXISTING LAW::
JUSTIFICATION::
Gender discrimination is currently not only allowed, but also standard practice for disability insurance rates. New York was ahead of its time in preventing health insurance companies from charging different rates, a provision of law later included in Obamacare. The same logic for health insurance premiums should also apply to disability insurance. As a result, this legislation would make it cheaper for businesses to hire women. Accordingly, this bill is essential as New York does everything it can to protect women and promote equality.

LOCAL FISCAL IMPLICATIONS::
EFFECTIVE DATE::
