What's happening

This bill prohibits the MTA from displaying gender information on commuter passes, tickets, or fare cards for identification.

Why it matters

  1. Protects privacy and reduces discrimination. By removing gender from MTA commuter passes and fare cards, the bill helps protect individuals’ personal information and reduces potential for gender-based discrimination or harassment during transit checks.

  2. Improves accessibility for non-binary and transgender riders. The measure makes public transportation more inclusive by not forcing riders to display a gender, which can be especially significant for those whose gender identity does not match the gender marker on official documents.

  3. Streamlines fare card issuance and reduces administrative errors. Eliminating the need to collect and display gender information can simplify the process of issuing tickets and passes, reducing paperwork and the risk of misgendering or administrative mistakes that inconvenience riders.
