What's happening

This bill requires hotels, motels, and inns in New York to offer condoms for sale to their registered guests.

Why it matters

  1. Improves public health access. By requiring hotels, motels, and inns to offer condoms for sale, the bill increases immediate access to protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), especially for travelers who may not have easy access to pharmacies.

  2. Reduces stigma and inconvenience. Making condoms available at the registration office helps normalize sexual health needs and reduces potential embarrassment or barriers for guests who might otherwise go without protection.

  3. Promotes community health responsibility. The mandate positions hospitality businesses as active participants in public health efforts, acknowledging their role in preventing the spread of STDs.

  4. Could set a statewide standard. If enacted, this law would establish a baseline expectation for guest services in New York’s hospitality industry, possibly influencing similar policy changes elsewhere.
