What's happening

This bill makes it illegal to loiter within 25 feet of a token booth in transportation facilities for over 25 minutes.

Why it matters

  1. Targets specific behavior near transit token booths. The bill focuses on reducing loitering within 25 feet of token booths for extended periods, aiming to address potential safety or nuisance concerns in these high-traffic areas.

  2. May impact vulnerable populations. Those who use transportation facilities as temporary shelter or gathering spots (such as the homeless) could be disproportionately affected by this restriction, raising questions about enforcement and support services.

  3. Exceptions for facility design. The law recognizes that some transportation facilities may not physically allow for a 25-foot buffer, indicating a degree of flexibility in its application.

  4. Potential for increased enforcement and monitoring. By creating a new offense, the bill could lead to more active policing in transportation hubs, which may influence perceptions of safety, civil liberties, and public space usage.
