What's happening
This bill prohibits adult homeless shelters from being located within 500 feet of any school in New York City.
Why it matters
May significantly limit where new adult homeless shelters can be opened in New York City. , as many neighborhoods have schools within 500 feet of potential sites, potentially making it harder to address homelessness with new facilities.
Could concentrate homeless shelters in areas with fewer schools. , which may disproportionately impact certain neighborhoods and raise equity concerns about the distribution of services citywide.
Impacts planning and resource allocation for both the Department of Homeless Services and local communities. , as shelter siting decisions would have to account for proximity to all schools, possibly delaying shelter openings or increasing costs.
Reflects and may intensify ongoing debates about the balance between supporting vulnerable populations and concerns from local residents or parents about safety and community resources near schools.
