What's happening

This bill allows certain seniors and physically disabled individuals to hunt deer and bear with crossbows during special longbow seasons.

Why it matters

  1. Expands hunting access for older adults and physically disabled individuals. , allowing them to use crossbows during special longbow seasons, which may help them participate in hunting activities otherwise made difficult by physical limitations.

  2. Creates a new "special crossbow privilege". on hunting licenses, formalizing an additional permit structure that specifically recognizes the needs of these populations and potentially streamlining enforcement and compliance.

  3. Aligns crossbow use with existing bowhunting rules. for eligible youth and adults, ensuring that all age-based and safety regulations for bowhunting also apply to crossbow hunters in the new category, maintaining consistency in oversight.

  4. May increase participation in deer and bear hunting seasons. , which could have implications for wildlife management, hunter recruitment/retention, and the balance of game populations in New York State.
