What's happening
The bill expands the definition of "immediate family" for private firearm transfers to include siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren.
Why it matters
Expands who can participate in private firearm transfers without going through a licensed dealer. By including siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren in the definition of "immediate family," more relatives can transfer firearms among themselves without triggering additional state regulatory requirements.
Potentially increases the number of legal private gun transfers. This change may make it easier for families to pass down firearms as heirlooms, gifts, or for inheritance purposes, especially across generations or between siblings.
Impacts background check and tracking mechanisms. Transfers among these newly included relatives would not require the same background checks or record-keeping as transfers between unrelated individuals, which could have implications for gun traceability and law enforcement oversight.
