What's happening
This bill expands the definition of "immediate family" for firearm transfers to include siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren.
Why it matters
Eases firearm transfers among more family members. By including siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren in the definition of “immediate family,” this bill allows these relatives to transfer firearms between one another without going through a licensed dealer, making legal transfers within families more accessible.
Reduces regulatory burdens for expanded family groups. The change means that more intra-family transfers won’t require background checks or dealer involvement, streamlining the process for families and potentially reducing costs and paperwork.
Raises potential public safety and legal questions. With more relatives able to transfer firearms privately, it could make it harder for authorities to track certain firearm transfers, which may have implications for gun safety and law enforcement oversight.
