What's happening
This bill requires insurance companies to offer premium reductions for boat owners who complete approved boating safety or advanced safety courses.
Why it matters
Creates a financial incentive for boat owners to improve safety skills. , potentially encouraging more people to take certified boating safety or advanced courses, which could lead to fewer boating accidents and claims.
Standardizes insurance premium reductions. by making them mandatory (not just optional) for those who complete approved courses, ensuring fair treatment and consistency among insurance providers for qualified boaters.
Excludes reductions for mandatory courses taken after a boating infraction. , focusing the benefit on proactive safety education rather than remedial or court-ordered classes.
Empowers state oversight. by allowing the Department of Financial Services and the Parks Commissioner to approve courses and set guidelines, providing assurance that only high-quality, relevant safety training qualifies for insurance discounts.
