What's happening
This bill creates the New York State Amateur Sports Development Advisory Council to advise on amateur sports promotion and related policies.
Why it matters
Centralizes expertise from diverse stakeholders. The advisory council is required to include representatives from a wide range of organizations (e.g., schools, clubs, businesses, tourism, recreation facilities), ensuring that amateur sports policy is shaped by those directly involved in the field.
Aims to boost economic and community benefits. By linking tourism resources and local attractions to amateur sports events, the council could help drive tourism, support local economies, and increase the visibility of New York as a destination for sporting events.
Influences policy and streamlines government response. The council is empowered to identify barriers in existing laws or regulations, recommend legislative changes, and request cooperation from state agencies, potentially making it easier to organize and promote amateur sports events statewide.
Provides ongoing accountability and strategic planning. With required annual reporting to the governor and legislature and a mandate for long-range strategies, the council creates a structured, continuous approach to developing and promoting amateur sports in New York.
