What's happening

This bill creates an Empire State Cricket Task Force to study and promote cricket in New York State, expiring June 30, 2022.

Why it matters

  1. Potential economic impact. The task force will specifically examine how cricket could benefit local and state economies, possibly leading to new investments, tourism, and job opportunities if the sport grows in popularity.

  2. Promotion of diversity and community engagement. By studying and promoting cricket—a sport popular among immigrant and multicultural communities—the state could foster greater inclusion, representation, and engagement for groups that may be underserved by existing sports programs.

  3. Education and youth development opportunities. The bill calls for an assessment of school and college cricket programs, which could result in expanded athletic opportunities, scholarships, and healthy activities for young people across New York.

  4. Policy recommendations for infrastructure and growth. The task force is tasked with developing strategies and recommendations, which could influence future funding, development of facilities, and official support for cricket statewide.
