What's happening
This bill adds passenger commuter ferry operators and crew to the list of protected transit workers under assault laws.
Why it matters
Expands legal protections to ferry crews. By adding passenger commuter ferry operators and crew to the list of protected transit workers, the bill acknowledges the risks they face and aims to deter assaults against them by treating such offenses as more serious crimes.
Recognizes ferries as critical public transit. The change signals that ferries are an integral part of New York’s public transportation network, warranting the same level of legal protection as bus and train personnel.
May improve worker safety and retention. Enhanced protections could help improve working conditions for ferry staff, potentially making these jobs more attractive and reducing turnover in a sector that is important for daily commuting and tourism.
Aligns assault penalties across transit modes. By ensuring that assaults on ferry workers are prosecuted similarly to those on other transit employees, the law promotes consistency and fairness in how New York State addresses violence against transportation staff.
