What's happening
The bill requires gas stations in New York to provide an accessible device and assistance for disabled motorists at self-service pumps.
Why it matters
Improves accessibility and independence. By requiring gas stations to install a device that allows disabled drivers to signal for assistance, the bill directly addresses barriers that prevent people with disabilities from refueling independently at self-service pumps.
Reduces discrimination and extra costs. Disabled motorists will not be charged more than the general public for fueling assistance, preventing situations where they might otherwise pay higher prices for full-service or be denied service altogether.
Sets clear compliance timelines and requirements. The bill gives single-station owners one year to comply and multi-station owners up to three years for all locations, ensuring a phased but enforceable approach to accessibility.
Balances station operator burdens. Exemptions exist for stations with only one employee on duty or those using remote-controlled equipment, acknowledging operational limitations while still prioritizing accessibility where feasible.
