What's happening

This bill requires the removal and discontinuation of the Yonkers toll plaza on the New York State Thruway.

Why it matters

  1. Local and Regional Economic Impact. Removing the Yonkers toll plaza could lower commuting costs for residents and businesses, potentially making the area more attractive for economic activity and easing the cost burden on daily drivers.

  2. Traffic Flow and Congestion. Eliminating the toll plaza may improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on this segment of the New York State Thruway, leading to shorter travel times and potentially less idling and vehicle emissions.

  3. State Revenue and Budgeting. The toll plaza generates revenue for maintenance and operation of the Thruway; its removal could require the state to find alternative funding sources for infrastructure upkeep or redistribute funds within the transportation budget.

  4. Equity and Accessibility. Discontinuing this toll may address concerns about fairness, especially for lower-income drivers who are disproportionately impacted by toll costs, thereby improving access to jobs and services for Yonkers and nearby communities.
