What's happening
This bill requires the Department of Labor to study and report on the impact of driverless vehicles on jobs in New York.
Why it matters
Direct focus on employment disruption. By specifically requiring analysis of potential job losses in delivery and transportation services, the study could shed light on how automation may threaten thousands of livelihoods, helping policymakers anticipate and address workforce displacement.
Informs future workforce policy. The findings will provide a data-driven foundation for any legislative or regulatory response, such as retraining programs, unemployment support, or strategies to adapt to technological changes in the job market.
Broad assessment beyond job loss. The bill allows the Department of Labor to include any additional information it deems relevant, which could uncover indirect effects—such as shifts in job types, creation of new industries, or impacts on wages and working conditions—ensuring a comprehensive understanding of driverless vehicle adoption.
