What's happening

This bill limits cable companies to charging subscribers only the actual cost of leased equipment, caps monthly fees at 12 months, and requires cost disclosure.

Why it matters

  1. Could reduce long-term costs for subscribers. By capping equipment charges to the company's actual cost and ending monthly fees after 12 months, customers avoid ongoing rental fees that can add up over the life of a subscription.

  2. Improves price transparency. Requiring companies to disclose equipment cost, payment duration, and retail purchase options empowers consumers to make more informed choices and potentially opt to buy their own equipment.

  3. Limits "hidden" maintenance fees. The bill explicitly prohibits additional or monthly fees for maintaining leased devices, addressing a common way providers increase overall bills.

  4. Strengthens consumer protections through enforcement. The law enables courts to issue injunctions and impose fines if companies violate these rules, giving the state a mechanism to ensure compliance and deter predatory billing practices.
