What's happening

This bill extends the expiration date of certain sections of the self-employment assistance program from 2017 to 2019.

Why it matters

  1. Extending the program’s expiration allows more unemployed New Yorkers to access self-employment assistance benefits, supporting individuals who want to start their own businesses instead of seeking traditional employment.

  2. The bill’s extension helps maintain continuity in workforce development efforts, potentially stimulating local economies as more people are encouraged and supported in entrepreneurial ventures.

  3. By pushing the expiration from 2017 to 2019, the legislation signals ongoing legislative support for alternative pathways to employment, which may be especially important during periods of slow job growth or economic transition.
