What's happening

This bill requires public authorities providing surface bus transportation in Queens to conduct security audits and develop plans to increase routes and ridership.

Why it matters

  1. Requires a thorough security review. By mandating a security audit in cooperation with the NYPD, the bill aims to address safety concerns for bus riders in Queens, potentially leading to tangible improvements in crime prevention and rider confidence.

  2. Directs public authorities to submit actionable recommendations. The resulting report must include specific suggestions for enhancing safety, bringing accountability and transparency to the process and enabling legislative oversight.

  3. Pushes for service expansion and increased ridership. Authorities are tasked with not just maintaining but actively growing bus service, which could improve transit equity, reduce congestion, and provide better access to jobs and services for Queens residents.

  4. Establishes clear timelines for action. With deadlines for both the security audit (2020) and the ridership plan (2022), the bill creates enforceable milestones, ensuring these initiatives are prioritized rather than indefinitely delayed.
