What's happening
This bill requires all retail gas stations in New York State to have backup generators to operate pumps during power outages.
Why it matters
Improves emergency preparedness. by ensuring that drivers, emergency vehicles, and essential workers can still access fuel during blackouts caused by storms, power grid failures, or other disasters.
Reduces economic disruptions. since backup power at gas stations helps keep supply chains, delivery services, and daily commutes functional when the electric grid is down.
Creates new compliance costs for station owners. , potentially raising operational expenses for small businesses, which could be passed on to consumers or require financial assistance or phased timelines.
Clarifies the definition of covered businesses. , including stations that serve both vehicles and boats, so the law broadly impacts transportation access across the state.
