What's happening

This bill requires drivers to provide proof of an eye test or doctor’s certification of vision when renewing a New York driver's license.

Why it matters

  1. Enhances road safety. by ensuring that all drivers renewing their licenses have up-to-date proof of acceptable vision, reducing the risk of accidents caused by impaired eyesight.

  2. Closes potential loopholes. in the license renewal process by explicitly requiring either an eye test or a doctor’s certification, rather than relying on self-certification or outdated records.

  3. Increases accessibility and convenience. by allowing drivers (or their doctors) to submit proof of vision electronically, making compliance easier without requiring extra in-person visits for many applicants.
