What's happening
This bill limits gas and electric company surcharges to no more than five percent of the basic service charge.
Why it matters
Protects consumers from excessive utility fees. By capping surcharges at five percent of the basic service charge, the bill aims to prevent gas and electric companies from adding unexpectedly high extra fees to customers’ bills.
Increases bill transparency and predictability. Limiting surcharges makes it easier for customers to understand and anticipate their monthly costs, potentially reducing confusion over fluctuating charges.
Encourages accountability for utility companies. This restriction could push companies to justify and manage their operational costs more efficiently, rather than relying on surcharges to cover expenses outside of basic service rates.
