What's happening

The bill requires public hearings in affected areas before the MTA can increase rates or fees for transportation or related services.

Why it matters

  1. Expands transparency and public input. by requiring the MTA to hold public hearings in the specific communities that would be affected before increasing fares, parking fees, or other significant charges, giving local residents a formal opportunity to voice concerns.

  2. Applies to a broader range of costs. beyond just passenger fares—changes that significantly impact the overall cost of using transportation (including parking and related services) now also require this public process.

  3. Could increase accountability for the MTA. by making it harder to raise rates or fees without directly engaging with the communities most impacted, potentially slowing or altering controversial price hikes.

  4. May influence decision-making. by forcing the MTA to consider not just financial needs, but also public feedback and local economic impacts, which could lead to more equitable or carefully-justified pricing changes.
