What's happening
This bill requires all motor vehicles made or assembled after July 1, 2018, to offer optional carbon monoxide detectors.
Why it matters
Addresses a real health risk. By requiring optional carbon monoxide detectors in newly manufactured or assembled vehicles, the bill aims to reduce the risk of CO poisoning—a silent and potentially deadly hazard, especially in situations involving exhaust leaks or running vehicles in enclosed spaces.
Consumer choice balanced with safety. The language specifies that detectors must be offered as an option rather than a mandate, allowing consumers to decide whether to include this safety feature without imposing additional costs on those who opt out.
Potential impact on vehicle standards. The bill directs the Department of Motor Vehicles to set standards for these detectors, which could influence both the quality and reliability of automotive CO detection technology and possibly set a precedent for other states or future federal regulations.
