What's happening

This bill removes time restrictions on speed cameras in New York City school zones and makes their use permanent.

Why it matters

  1. Expanding speed camera enforcement to all hours. means drivers can now be fined for speeding in school zones at any time, not just during specific school-related periods—potentially reducing speeding and accidents at all times, but also raising concerns about fairness and proportionality.

  2. Making the speed camera program permanent. removes the possibility that it could expire or require renewal, signaling a long-term commitment to automated enforcement and potentially changing how drivers approach speed limits in school zones for years to come.

  3. Broader use of cameras could lead to more tickets and increased revenue. for the city, which might be used for road safety or other municipal purposes, but could also be viewed as a regressive measure affecting lower-income drivers disproportionately.

  4. The law still requires the city to consider safety data (like crash history and roadway design) when choosing where to place cameras. , which aims to ensure that enforcement is focused on genuinely dangerous locations rather than being used indiscriminately.
