What's happening

This bill extends the expiration date for section three of the law establishing the New York telecommunications relay service center to June 30, 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Maintains vital communication services for people with hearing or speech disabilities. By extending the expiration date, the bill ensures that the New York telecommunications relay service center—which facilitates phone communication for these communities—remains operational.

  2. Prevents potential service disruption. Without this extension, the legal authority for the relay service center would lapse, possibly interrupting access to relay services for those who depend on them for daily communication, work, and emergencies.

  3. Signals ongoing state commitment to accessibility. The extension demonstrates that New York continues to prioritize technological accommodations and inclusive infrastructure, which may affect future funding, service upgrades, and policy development for people with disabilities.
