What's happening

This bill extends the "POW-MIA Memorial Highway" designation for state route twelve through additional counties to Broome County.

Why it matters

  1. Expands Recognition. By extending the POW-MIA Memorial Highway designation through additional counties all the way to Broome County, the bill broadens public recognition and remembrance of prisoners of war and those missing in action, potentially raising awareness in more communities along Route 12.

  2. Ceremonial, Not Legal Change. The bill explicitly states the highway’s official name will remain unchanged, ensuring that while the memorial designation is significant, it will not cause confusion for travelers, emergency services, or commercial activities that rely on official highway names.

  3. Statewide Memorial Network. Adding more counties to the memorial highway increases the continuity and visibility of the tribute across a larger geographic area, signaling the state’s commitment to honoring veterans and reinforcing the importance of their sacrifices across upstate New York.
