What's happening

This bill requires pre-licensing driver courses in New York to include information on organ and tissue donation and registration.

Why it matters

  1. Raises awareness and education about organ and tissue donation among new drivers. , potentially increasing the pool of registered donors by reaching people at a formative stage when they are about to receive a driver's license.

  2. Standardizes donor registration information across all pre-licensing driver courses. , ensuring consistent, statewide exposure to facts about donation and the process for registering as a donor.

  3. Addresses a public health need by leveraging an existing education framework. , making organ donation education a required component of a course that nearly all new drivers must take, rather than relying on optional or ad-hoc outreach efforts.
