What's happening
This bill expands state funding to cover equipment, service, and transaction fees for electronic benefit transfer technology at farmers' markets and food access points.
Why it matters
Addresses hidden costs that can deter farmers' markets. from accepting EBT (food stamp) payments, such as transaction, wireless, and reactivation fees, making it easier for small vendors to participate.
Potentially increases access to fresh, local foods for low-income residents. by supporting more locations—including “non-traditional” food access points in food deserts—in offering EBT payment options.
Could help stabilize and grow local food economies. by making it financially feasible for more markets and vendors to serve EBT customers, thus increasing their sales and customer base.
Reduces administrative and financial barriers. for markets and vendors, which may encourage more widespread acceptance of nutrition benefits and improve food equity across underserved communities.
