What's happening
This bill excludes freight transportation brokers from the definition of "employer" under New York's labor law.
Why it matters
Freight transportation brokers would no longer be responsible for compliance with certain labor laws. that apply to "employers"—this could impact worker protections, wage claims, and legal liabilities for drivers and others in the freight industry.
The change may shift more responsibility onto trucking companies or contractors. that directly employ or contract with drivers, potentially creating a gap in accountability for labor standards enforcement.
By clarifying and narrowing the definition of "employer," the bill could influence how disputes over worker classification are resolved. (such as whether someone is an employee or independent contractor), possibly making it harder for some workers to claim rights or protections under New York labor law.
